The Screed Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the free-floating screed, which is attached to the paver vehicle. This role involves ensuring the proper placement, consistency, and quality of asphalt materials to achieve the desired grade and surface finish.
How You’ll Add Value
- Operate the free-floating asphalt screed safely and efficiently, following all safety protocols.
- Perform daily maintenance and safety checks on the equipment to ensure it is in optimal working condition.
- Monitor and control the distribution of asphalt to ensure uniformity and maintain the specified mat thickness.
- Adjust the screed to maintain proper asphalt depth using both manual and automatic grade controls.
- Set up, operate, and disassemble automatic grade control systems as required for precision placement.
- Measure and regulate asphalt width, thickness, and application rate to meet the project’s specifications.
- Observe terrain conditions and adjust the screed to account for base variations, ensuring a level and consistent surface.
- Preheat the screed to the appropriate temperature to avoid sticking and tearing of the asphalt mat.
- Collaborate with the paving crew to plan and execute project paving procedures efficiently.
- Train new employees in the safe and effective operation of the screed and equipment, ensuring adherence to operational standards.
The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following:
Qualifications & Experience
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. is preferred.
- Valid Class 5 Operator’s License; clean Driver Abstract.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience working on a paving crew.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in asphalt raking on a paving crew.
- Proficient understanding of asphalt and raking techniques.
- Knowledge of paving construction methods, asphalt and road construction materials, heavy equipment
- operation and industry requirements.
- Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
