Reporting to Foreman, a Pipelayer will be responsible for preparing and installing underground pipe, including but not limited to: sewer, storm, water or gas, power, and cable (depending on the utility group – Deep or Shallow Utilities).
General Responsibilities:
- Assist other workers with general labour activities during trenching and the laying of pipe.
- Load, unload, and move construction materials around the worksite.
- Manually remove large rocks and debris turned up by heavy equipment, ensuring all revealed rocks and debris are clear.
- Understand, interpret, and follow directions from supervisors as to the required work area.
- Signal operators of construction equipment to facilitate alignment and movement of materials.
- Work independently, completing tasks as pertaining to the process of laying pipe on line and grade.
- Ensure the pipe is properly bedded before backfilling occurs.
- Using a rake or shovel, spread gravel and other construction materials for padding, setting structures, or other utilities and piping.
- Ensure all work is conducted in a safe and responsible manner.
- Shovel around live utilities to expose them without damaging them.
- Be aware of changes to materials and techniques. Adapt easily to those changes.
- Work with a variety of hand and power tools used in underground utility installation, and a variety of materials.
- Be aware of proper slinging of pipes, structures, etc., and ensure safe work procedures are followed during the lowering of materials into the excavation.
- Other construction and general labor related duties as required.
The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following:
Qualifications & Experience
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. is preferred.
- Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean Driver’s Abstract (as per Company Policy), is preferred.
- Minimum 2–3 years of experience within the underground utility construction industry.
- Must be physically fit and able to repetitively lift and carry at least 40 LBS on a regular basis.
